Foundries recycling used moulding sand often face one critical choice: standard single rotary dryer or three‑pass (triple‑drum) dryer. Both can dry reclaimed foundry sand, but their fit differs sharply based on your sand type, space, energy budget and quality requirements.

Single Rotary Dryer (Single Drum)

A single rotary dryer uses one long inclined rotating drum. Reclaimed sand flows in one direction while lifting flights toss sand through hot gas.

Pros

- Simple mechanical structure, fewer internal parts. Wear inspection and liner replacement are straightforward.

- Tolerates inconsistent feed: lumpy, slightly sticky reclaimed sand or sand with residual resin clogs less easily.

- Lower upfront capital cost; easier to source spare parts globally.

- Gentle enough to handle heavily contaminated old sand from mixed green sand / resin sand lines.

Cons

- Longer drum length, much larger floor footprint. Needs stronger foundation and bigger workshop space.

- Lower thermal efficiency. Fuel consumption rises, especially when targeting low moisture (<2%).

- Higher exhaust temperature, which increases load and maintenance for downstream dust collectors.

- Moisture uniformity is harder to hold steady at high throughput; occasional wet pockets can remain, causing casting gas defects.

Best for: Small-to-medium foundries with loose space, mixed contaminated reclaimed sand, limited budget, or batch production schedules.

Three‑Pass Dryer (Triple Drum)

Three nested rotating drums (inner, middle, outer). Sand travels forward in the hot inner drum, reverses in the middle, then moves slowly through the outer insulated layer. This lengthens residence time inside a compact shell.

Pros

- Far higher heat utilization. Typical fuel savings of 30–40% versus single rotary dryers at equal capacity.

- Compact layout, only ~1/3 the footprint of an equivalent single drum. Perfect for foundries with limited workshop area.

- Drying is more uniform. Stable low final moisture down to 0.5–1%, which is critical for resin‑bonded reclaimed sand to avoid casting porosity.

- Lower discharge temperature. Hot sand exits cooler, often removing the need for a separate sand cooler.

- Well‑designed lifting flights reduce particle breakage, preserving original sand grain grading.

Cons

- More complex internal structure. Wear inspection and liner repair take longer.

- Less forgiving of heavy clumps or sticky sand. Lumps may bridge inside the narrow annular gaps.

- Higher initial purchase cost; replacement of internal wear liners costs more over time.

Best for: Medium-to-large continuous reclamation lines, resin sand recovery, tight workshop space, high production volume, and strict low‑moisture requirements.

Quick Decision Guide

- Pick single rotary dryer: if your reclaimed sand has lumps/residual stickiness, budget is tight, or site has plenty of room.

- Pick three‑pass dryer: if you run continuous 24h resin sand reclamation, need stable low moisture, want lower fuel bills, or have limited floor space.
